Lariat Necklace Kit : Materials Included
Easy and effective - this beautiful lariat necklace can be created simply by threading individual beads or segments of beads onto the beading silk and then just knotting to hold in place. The beading silk is 2 metres in length.
1 x Czech Project Bead Mix (100 grams of mixed pressed glass beads)
1 x Beading Silk #10
10 x Headpins silver-plated
10 x Jump Rings 5mm silver-plated
2 x Crimp Covers 4mm silver-plated
Lariat Necklace : Instructions
Unravel the beading silk and integral needle. On the end without the needle, leave a tail of about 12cm. Make a simple knot by making a loop and passing the needle end through. Before you tighten the knot put a needle or headpin in the loop and pull down on the pin and thread. This ensures you can position your knot exactly where you want. Select a large bead or a small group of smaller ones in a pleasing arrangement, and thread these through the beading needle and down to the knot. Tie another knot as before, pushing the knot down close to the beads. Tie another knot 3cm from the last one, add another bead/beads, tie another knot. Continue in this manner until you have 12cm of thread left. If you are making the simpler version of the necklace trim the thread 2cm away from the last knot at each end. This will fray in time into an attractive tassel end.
To make the dangles, make a small loop 3cm from the last knot on each end. To get the correct size make the loop around a ball point pen then tie a double knot. Remove from pen and apply a tiny amount of beading or super glue to the knot to secure. Place a crimp cover over each knot and close.
Make 10 dangles, 5 for each loop by threading a selection of beads onto each of the headpins. Make sure you leave about 7mm of the headpin showing. Using flat nosed pliers bend the end of each headpin over to form a right angle. Using round nosed pliers grasp the end of the headpin and roll towards you to form a loop. Open each of the jump rings, hook onto the beading silk loop, hand a dangle on the jump ring then close the jump ring.

*These indian made glass beads can have variable sized holes, which may need to be enlarged slightly with a bead reamer to get rid of the chalky lining which occurs in the manufacturing process, allowing the cord to fit through easily.
Lariat Necklace Moody Blues : Instructions
1 Cut the cord into two equal pieces and dip the last 1" of each end into a drop of glue and leave to dry. This will make it easier to thread the cord through the beads
2 Holding the two pieces of cord together, knot them together about 8cm from the end.
To place a knot exactly where you need it, tie it around a needle or similar, and without tightening it fully, position the knot by pulling it into place with the needle. Remove the needle before carefully tightening the knot.
3 Take 1 cord and knot it about 4 - 5 cm further along. Add 1 round, 1 tube, 1 round and then knot again, close to the last bead.
4 Put the cords together again and knot them together a further 5cm along.
5 Thread both cords through 1 large bead From the Ethnic mix, then knot them together close to the bead. So that the two knots lie directly either side of the bead.
6 Repeat from step 3, until all the squared tubes are used.
7 Hold both the cords together and trim, leaving a tale of 5cm. Repeat this at the other end of the lariat.
8 Working at one end, place the ends of both cords into an end fastener (the loop of the fastener pointing away from the last bead) and fold the sides over the cords, using the flat nosed pliers, so that they are gripped firmly.
9 Repeat this for the other end of the lariat.
10 Thread a round bead onto an eye pin. Using flat nosed pliers, bend the pin away from you 90 degrees, and trim with the side cutters, leaving about 7mm. Grip the end of the pin with the round nosed pliers and roll the pliers towards you to form a loop in the pin. Before fully closing the loop, hook it into the loop on one of the end fasteners, and then make sure the pin is fully closed. Repeat this for the other end of the lariat.
11 Using the same technique make 4 dangles using 4 of the round beads, this time fully closing the loop and placing them to one side.
12 Make a further 6 dangles in the same way, using 6 of the smaller ethnic beads, and fully closing the loops.
13 Take one jump ring, open it using the flat nosed pliers, (by pulling the edges across each other rather than prising it apart), and insert 5dangles (1 silver, 1 round, 1 silver, 1 round, 1 silver). Then hook the ring into the loop at the bottom of the last bead at one end of the lariat. Close the jump ring by sliding the edges back in line with each other. Repeat with the remaining dangles for the other end of the lariat.
Your lariat is now ready to wear whichever way you want!
